Take a Walk, a Deep Breath, and a Second to Appreciate

Hey friends,

For this beautifully warm Monday Motivation, we are focusing on the power of simply taking a walk. Society is designed to surround us with so many things that stress us out, traffic, work, bills, family; and these stresses force our Sympathetic Nervous System to be on overdrive most of the time.

The Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) is one of two divisions of the autonomic nervous system that we are focusing on. These nervous systems act by themselves without any mental input, hence why they are known as autonomic. The SNS causes cortisol levels to rise in the body, causing the body to work harder than it should be to maintain a homeostatic state.

By taking a walk, not doing intense exercise, you allow your body to shut off the SNS and allow the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) to be active and calm the body down, focusing on bodily functions rather than making the body prepare for mental and physical activity.

So friends, on this Motivational Monday, I encourage you to take a ten minute walk to just clear your head, allow yourself to take a couple of deep breathes and appreciate the little things that surround you.
